Busybird Creative Fellowship

September 1, 2021 - October 2, 2021

The Busybird Fellowship is an initiative designed to help an emerging writer through their tentative steps into the industry, providing a mix of:

  • actual cash ($500): always useful, whether it’s for those pesky supplies we need as writers (e.g. laptop, printer ink, paper, tea) or just to use to blow off some steam and experience life.
  • use of the Busybird Publishing Studio spaces: writers can feel free to come in and write in a fun, engaging environment.
  • use of the Busybird team as mentors: Busybird’s staff comprise writers who’ve been widely published, are intimate with the trappings of publishing, and also have experience in screenwriting.
  • free entry to any of our in-house workshops: Busybird hosts a number of three-hour workshops on writing and publishing – great opportunities to learn more about your craft.
  • discounted publishing services: if you decide you want to self-publish, then we’ll discount any of the services you might require.

The Fellowship will return later in 2021.

* Please note: examples of our definition of an emerging artist are a writer with less than 3 publications. Have a chat with us about your situation and we’ll tell you if you are eligible.

2019 Busybird Creative Fellow

Congratulations to David Murray, the winner of the 2019 Busybird Creative Fellowship.David’s main focus is a longer work of fiction. He has been developing this piece for several years now and is ready to fully explore its potential.

With the help of mentoring and feedback, he hopes to have a manuscript ready by the end of 2019.

I am excited by the possibility of working closely with a professional mentor, as is offered in this fellowship.Considering what I have learnt from people like myself, I can’t begin to imagine what I could learn from a mentor.

2018 Busybird Creative Fellow

Congratulations to Rose Grahame, the winner of the 2018 Busybird Creative Fellowship. For the last seven years, Rose has been working on novel with a dual point of view.

When Ashlinn, a young Australian woman, discovers her grandfather had been engaged to another woman prior to his marriage, Ashlinn goes to Ireland to track the woman down and learn more about the relationship.

Busybird grants me access to people who will continue to encourage and drive my project. It’s such a great opportunity and I can’t wait to get going.

2017 Busybird Creative Fellow

Congratulations to Maryanne Eve, the winner of the 2017 Busybird Creative Fellowship.A resident of Kinglake, Maryanne experienced the tragedy of Black Saturday firsthand, and is interested in writing about how the aftermath of the fires affected the relationships of women in the Kinglake area.

Throughout 2017, Maryanne will work with Busybird Publishing on developing both her writing and her project.

Having the regular input of other experienced and published writers is priceless and I feel very fortunate to be given this opportunity. Blaise has already given me some invaluable feedback and ideas.

2016 Busybird Creative Fellow

Congratulations to Angus Watson, the winner of the 2016 Busybird Creative Fellowship.Angus plans to use the Fellowship to work on revising ‘Forever’s End’, the first book of his fantasy series, which is set twenty years after the devastating Mage Rebellion, with the magic-wielding survivors attempting to anonymously re-integrate into society.

Angus also plans to work on ‘Dawn’s Embrace’, the next book in the series. His goal ultimately is to bring ‘Forever’s End’ up to a standard that he can submit to commercial publishers in hope of procuring their interest and, failing that, exploring the potential behind self-publishing.

To be taken under the wing of already established authors with so much experience in the business is incredibly exciting. It makes me feel like even those super-hard challenges have been worth working through.
