Loss and grief can darken a person’s colours, but they can always be brightened again.

The Colours of Ash is a heartbreaking story of loss, both of family and identity, which follows the journey of a young father who is facing not only his own grief, but also that of his wife’s, as they both cope with the loss of their son.

Unlike other novels of its kind, The Colours of Ash takes on the perspective of the father, drawing readers away from the typically feminised story of the loss of a child. It offers readers the insight into a father’s grief that is often overlooked or portrayed as violent. Ash’s grief is heartbreaking and his desire to have his life return to normal is a compelling story.

The novel provides an emotional rollercoaster of sadness, joy, and devastation, finally arriving at the peaceful ending of the calm after many different storms.

The Colours of Ash is a true representation of the internal struggles of loss and the importance of family and friends in the support that brings the colour back to life and the motivation to continue with life, no matter how hard it is.

Family is a strong theme throughout the novel, showing how a broken family can become reunited by the family connections around them.

Waking in hospital Ash knows his whole life has been flipped on its head and his long journey…
