Karen, we entirely agree. It’s fine to abandon a book. That’s why we wrote, ‘That’s fine as a practice …’ There’s no reason to persevere with a book that’s not doing anything for you, especially when there’s lots of great books out there to read.

But if people have read only such a small sampling, they shouldn’t review a book (as a whole) — especially if that review contains a rating. That’s not fair on the content as a whole, no matter how poorly written it is.

Some books I have downloaded were so poorly written–misspelled words, sloppy punctuation, missing or misused words, mangled grammar, etc.–that they deserved not one more minute of my time. One book had three grammatical errors in the very first sentence. Such poorly written/edited work indicates that the author neither values that work nor its audience. If the author doesn’t value his/her work, why should readers?
